When working with refugees, understanding trauma is not just helpful, it’s essential. Many people navigating displacement carry invisible burdens that impact their well-being and ability to integrate. At SEET, we believe that equipping our mentors with the right tools is key to providing truly supportive, trauma-informed guidance.
That’s why, on 8 July 2025, SEET hosted a dedicated workshop on Trauma and PTSD. This workshop was led by professional counsellor and trainer Krish Phua, and while it was held at ETH Zurich, the session was also available online. This workshop focused on practical strategies for supporting mentees while also fostering prevention and resilience.
Who Joined the Workshop?
The event was primarily designed for SEET Mentors and Stakeholders, including board members, volunteers, and members. But what truly stood out was the presence of SEET Mentees (refugees) and supporters from the Perspektiven Studium network. This participation reflects their commitment to strengthening their independence and resilience as they begin their academic journeys in Switzerland.
Inside the Workshop
During the session, participants explored:
- Trauma-Focused Approaches: Understanding what trauma and PTSD are, and how they manifest.
- Practical Tools & Techniques: Strategies for supporting individuals with migratory backgrounds.
- Self-Care for Mentors: Building resilience to prevent burnout and secondary trauma.
The ultimate goal? To empower and guide mentors to better support their SEET mentees, helping them feel more secure throughout their educational journey.
A Word from Krish Phua
“I am honoured and grateful to have conducted this Trauma and PTSD workshop for SEET. I was deeply encouraged to see not only mentors and stakeholders, but also mentees, fully engaged in the session. This shows a profound dedication to self-understanding and resilience—qualities that are essential when continuing or restarting education in a new country.
My hope is that this workshop sparks a positive shift in attitudes and approaches when supporting people affected by trauma. Ultimately, fostering understanding and compassion was our most significant objective.”
By investing in trauma-informed training, SEET ensures that mentors are equipped with empathy, resilience, and awareness while supporting their mentees.
