Become a mentor

We are delighted that you are interested in making an important contribution to our mission as a mentor.

The following tasks await you as a mentor:

You will help your mentee to enroll or stay enrolled in the appropriate degree program at a college or university. Every mentee has a unique life situation, which is why a mentor's tasks can vary depending on their needs. However, there are many things that our mentees often need support with:

  • A contact person who helps with questions and always offers support.
  • Support in clarifying their own interests and goals for their professional future, taking into account resources such as time, money and language skills as well as personal commitments (e.g. family or work).
  • Help with everyday questions, but also with topics such as administrative matters, social welfare, IT issues or Microsoft Office.
  • Insight into the Swiss education system and the various opportunities it offers.
  • Support with the recognition of credits and diplomas from your home country or other countries.
  • Help with the search for suitable German courses.
  • Support in registering for studies, writing applications and preparing for job interviews.

This process is accompanied by SEET. At the beginning, a mentoring agreement is made in which the mentee's goals and the next steps are defined. They also discuss how the collaboration should be structured. The agreement is reviewed in a reflection meeting and adjusted if necessary. At the final wrap-up, the goals achieved and what went well or less well are reviewed together. The aim is to ensure that the mentee and mentor clarify together what is still needed to bring the mentoring to a successful conclusion.

You are suitable as a mentor if you meet the following requirements:

  • Current or recently completed studies at a Swiss university
  • Good communication skills, reliability and openness
  • Willingness to invest approx. 1 hour per week for one year
  • Availability for regular meetings or calls with your mentee
  • Regular participation in SEET events in Zurich (participation in mentor training, kick-off, reflection meeting and wrap-up is mandatory)
  • German language skills at least C1
  • Experience with mentoring, teaching, coaching or working with refugees is helpful, but not a requirement

As a mentor at SEET, I can make a small but direct contribution to the integration of refugees with my study experience and personal network.
